Children's theater

based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen in an adaptation by Isabelle Weh

In the empire of the Emperor of China there lived a nightingale that sang so enchantingly that people came from all over the world to hear it. They admired the palace and the garden, but when they heard the nightingale, who lived on the edge of the magnificent, large forest, they always said: "But the nightingale has the greatest power!"

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away. In China. A long, long time ago, the Emperor of China ruled there. He was a very strict and powerful ruler. He also ate a lot and was quite fat. He never left his golden throne. His imperial household servants had their hands full fulfilling the most absurd wishes of their ruler.

When the emperor heard one day that his country was the most beautiful, but that a nightingale had the greatest power, he was furious and ordered the nightingale to come to his palace. With the help of a simple kitchen maid, the conceited steward Ming Ting manages to lure the nightingale into the palace. It sings so beautifully that the emperor locks it in a golden cage and wants to keep it.

But why a bird does not belong in a cage and why the emperor has to realize that possessions are not everything in life is revealed in this fast-paced fairy tale with lots of humour, performed by just one actress who plays all the roles, a narrator who accompanies the fairy tale with music and a life-size imperial puppet that is sure to stay in the children's memories for a long time.
